Plants

At Ashbrook, plants come first...

Plants are the heart and soul of Ashbrook.  The business started life as a wholesale nursery, and we are proud to continue growing the majority of plants sold in our garden centre.

If you love tending to your garden, finding the right plants can make your hobby all-the-more enjoyable.  With our comprehensive range you will be spoilt for choice.

We grow over 2000 varieties ourselves, and stock a good selection year round to suit all situations and conditions.

Bedding & Patio

Ideal for long lasting colour, we grow all our own bedding and patio plants and have a good range available throughout all the seasons.

Our bedding and patio plants are perfect for planted containers and baskets, or to fill beds.  While most tend to be annuals, or tender perennials, you really do get an impact.  Long flowering periods means your garden can look colourful all season!

In the Spring and Summer months, we have a vast range to choose from, while in the colder months we offer a smaller range of hardy plants that will bring colour to your garden right through winter.

We do not treat our plants with hormonal growth regulators which many of the larger growers do – this keeps plants compact giving them a longer shelf life, so when you plant Ashbrook plants in your garden they just ‘take off’!

Perennials

We are particularly proud of the range of perennial plants we grow at Ashbrook – our huge selection of quality plants makes Ashbrook a ‘gardener’s paradise’!

We grow all our perennial plants on site and have something suitable for all situations and soil conditions.  We have an A-Z layout to help you find specific plants as well as ‘hotspots’ and displays  highlighting seasonal favourites.  Our staff are happy to help, so please ask if you need any advice!

Each year we like to try something new as well as the old favourites. Our beautiful plants have been used to great effect in award winning gardens at the Scone Palace Garden Fair, the Dundee Flower Show and Gardening Scotland.

If you can’t see what you want or if you ‘have a wish list’ – do ask us for help – we have lots more growing ‘out the back’ – more than we can hope to display in the shop!

Alpines & Heathers

Alpines provide a range of foliage colour and texture over winter followed by great floral displays in spring, while Heathers are great for year round interest.

Alpines, or rock garden plants are hardy plants, ideal for rockeries, raised beds, borders or planters.  We have a comprehensive range grown at Ashbrook.  Many will tolerate poor soil and evergreen spreading varieties are great for weed suppressing ground cover.

Alpines tend to flower in early spring, bringing colour to the garden before the summer bedding and herbaceous perennials come into flower.

Heathers provide interest in the garden all year round with both flower and foliage colour, and of course the bees just love them!
When planting a heather garden be sure to choose varieties to give colour through the seasons, not just those looking bonny today.

We grow our Alpines at Ashbrook, while most of our heathers are grown by a specialist in Fife.

Shrubs, Roses & Climbers

Shrubs are great for adding a bit of structure to a garden.  We have a comprehensive range, to suit all growing conditions, not just the ‘seasonal highlights’.

We have shrubs available in sizes from 2l or 3l pots as well as larger ‘specimen’ shrubs for those who want an instant impact. There are plenty of shrubs that provide some winter interest whether through flowers, foliage or berries – great for attracting birds to your garden.

If we don’t have what you are looking for please ask, we get regular deliveries from our Scottish growers throughout the growing season.

Rhododendrons provide evergreen foliage and glorious colour in late spring. Dwarf, mid-sized and large growing varieties available – please ask for advice.

We have a full range of climbing, floribunda, shrub, hybrid-T, patio, species, and celebration roses carefully selected for disease resistance, fragrance and good performance under Scottish growing conditions.

Climbing plants are brilliant as they can fit in virtually any garden!  Clematis are hugely popular and we grow some ourselves.

Trees & Hedging

We offer a fantastic range of both ornamental and fruit trees.  Many of our trees are sourced from Frank P Matthews, a highly regarded grower in Tenbury Wells.

There are so many wonderful things that trees offer us and nature.  Whether it is beautiful blossoms, delicious fruit, colourful foliage, interesting bark or striking shapes there is joy to be found.

We categorise our trees as ornamental or fruit trees, and stock a good range all year round.  It is always worth considering the space you have available when selecting your tree! It is worth asking our team for advice – especially if you are unsure about rootstocks on fruit trees!

Bare-root hedging is an economical way to plant a hedge or woodland area, or you can simply use potted specimens.  While we don’t always stock huge amounts, we can order in to meet your needs.  We also stock some larger specimen laurels or conifers for those looking for an ‘instant’ evergreen hedge.

We have a selection of conifers arranged on the nursery benches to help you chose the right variety for your situation. 10 year height less than 4ft, more than 4ft, or suitable for ground cover. Conifers are excellent for colour in the garden through the winter, several varieties changing colour when the cold weather comes adopting autumnal shades or intensifying the golden tints. Dwarf varieties are excellent for winter planters – taller growing varieties can also be used for this – but don’t expect them to stay small for ever!

Fruit, Vegetables & Herbs

There are few things more satisfying than enjoying some home grown produce! We have fruit trees, soft fruit, herbs and vegetables.

Growing your own produce can be to any scale you want.  You don’t need a huge allotment to fill, a herb box on the windowsill will do if that’s all the space you have.  Not only does home grown produce tend to taste better than from the supermarkets, it is generally cheaper and more environmentally friendly too!

As well as fruit trees cuch as apples, pears, plums etc, we stock all sorts of fruit bushes from gooseberries, to blackcurrants, as well as strawberry plants and more.

We grow a wide selection of herbs, and have some pre-planted containers – ideal for your own miniature ‘kitchen garden’.

We grow a good selection of vegetables including allotment favourites such as tomatoes, cucumbers, brassicas, leeks, beans and much more, ready for you to plant out.

You can also browse our seed and bulb sections.  We tend to get fresh stock in at the start of the year including seed potatoes, onion sets etc.

Grasses, Ferns & Plants for Shade

Grown at Ashbrook, we offer plants in a range of sizes and they can be perfect for use in planters or baskets, as border fillers, or they can look great planted around your patio.

Grasses are becoming more and more popular in garden design offering structure and texture, while there is something so soothing about their gentle movement in the breeze.  Grasses are generally pretty tough and provide interest throughout the year.

Ferns generally prefer shade and we have a dedicated ‘plants for shade’ section within our garden centre.  There is often a false perception that shade loving plants just offer foliage interest and little colour.  However, we have lots grown at Ashbrook that will provide year round interest, and many shade loving plants are great for early pollinators.

Flowers & Houseplants

A vase of cut flowers or some houseplants are a wonderful way to bring nature indoors and they are know to provide many benefits such as lowering stress.

Growing cut flowers for wholesale was how Ashbrook started out, and we still grow and arrange our famous ‘posies’ on site.  There aren’t many florists who can boast that their bunches have zero air miles, never mind zero road miles!

Inside our garden centre building, you will find a delightfully curated selection of houseplants including cactuses, succulents, foliage and flowering plants.
